Kaleb took the spear and shot Ma'ldema R'he's arm.

The plasma shots caused small holes, which regenerated quickly. Furthermore, the beast's arm was very large and small shots did not affect its mobility. Either way, Kaleb kept shooting.

The Ma'ldema R'he pointed its hand at the boy, charged up an attack, and as it released the ice from its hand it transformed into a large spear that went straight for Kaleb.

The boy barely managed to dodge, but this caused him to fall to the ground and drop the weapon.
